This is a crazy idea. It definately is to increase viewership of the show, by trying to get more popular movies nominated. But they probably won't get the result they want. They mentioned in the press release that it was to make room for movies like last years The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Wall-E, and Tropic Thunder.

That is crazy. If there had been 10 nominees last year, yes The Dark Knight probably would have been nominated and maybe Wall-E. But there is no way that Iron Man and Tropic Thunder would have been nominated. (and I really liked Iron Man) If they have 10 nominees, it is just as likely that they will just nominate 10 small movies that the general public hasn't heard of. The Academy's taste isn't going to suddenly change. As long as the concept that a film must be "important" to be a Best Picture nominee is in the minds of the Academy voters, then the list of nominees will continue to look the same.

And for the record, I am not a basher of their nominees. I actually thought Slumdog Millionaire was the best movie I saw last year.

I don't much care for the singing and dancing, but I do love the clips, if the montages are well-done. Lately, they've been kind of lame. The explanations really should go though. Chances are if you're watching the Oscars, you know what most of that stuff means, or you know enough to enjoy it --- especially without the boring exposition.

I utterly and totally agree with you Illinois, though i do have a soft spot for the silly opening. But i used to watch the whole thing years ago and now its just so long winded and i really cant be bothered. I usually just find out the major winners via the net and thats about it these days

I don't think that I have even seen five films that I would consider "Best Picture" worthy this year.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just announced in a small blurb the Oscars this year will be bumping their Best Picture nominees from five to ten beginning with the upcoming 2010 Oscars President Sid Ganis announced today at a press conference in Beverly Hills.

"After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year," said Ganis. "The final outcome, of course, will be the same - one Best Picture winner - but the race to the finish line will feature 10, not just five, great movies from 2009."

The move is an obvious response to the recent discussion concerning The Dark Knight's absence from the nominees for more art house style films such as The Reader and I would expect we can now look at Up as a serious contender for a Best Picture nominee when previous Pixar favorites Ratatouille and Wall-e were left in the cold.

"Having 10 Best Picture nominees is going allow Academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories, but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize," commented Ganis. "I can't wait to see what that list of ten looks like when the nominees are announced in February."
